Ohio Battle of the Buildings

Rules of the Game

The OHLA Energy Star Battle of the Buildings is a 12-month competition and recognition program for OHLA members. Participants are competing to see who reduce energy (and water-optional) the most energy on a percentage basis from their own starting point. Big or small-- every building is on an equal playing field in this “Biggest Loser”-styled competition. Participants must assess their building’s energy use in EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager online tool and work to improve. The contest is a way to encourage energy-efficient practices and instill a spirit of friendly competition.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE?

There is no cost to participate.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Big or small, all OHLA members are welcome to enter one or more existing hotels, inns or resorts of any size in the competition as long as the building is located in the state of Ohio.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO COMPETE?

Contestants are required to upload complete utility electric and gas usage data for the 2017 calendar year into ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager. This baseline will serve as each participant’s starting weight. Water usage must be entered if competing in that category.

WHAT IS THE COMPETITION TIMELINE?

Registration closed April 30, 2018. The competition period runs from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019.

HOW WILL WINNERS BE DETERMINED?

Using the data submitted to Portfolio Manager, winners in several categories will be determined based on who shows the greatest percentage energy reduction during the contest period (April 2018 to March 2019). A third-party verification screening will be conducted on winning buildings to ensure the data entered in Portfolio Manager has been accurately reported.

HOW WILL WINNERS BE RECOGNZED?

Winners will be recognized at an exciting Summer Solice celebration event on June 21, 2019 in Columbus, Ohio

HOW IS ENERGY USAGE DATA CALCULATED?

Energy use is measured in kBtu’s. This data comes from utility bills that are entered into ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager by you (or your representative).  Portfolio Manager converts the information you enter into a whole building kBtu and divides it by the building’s square footage.  The result is the building’s energy use intensity (EUI).  To calculate the energy percentage difference over the competition year, the EUI from the previous year is subtracted from the EUI of the current year.  The calculated difference is how we determine the biggest losers.

EUI = kBtu's/square footage

Current Year - Prior Year = % lost or gained

Water use is measured in gallons. This data comes from water bills and that are entered into ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager by you (or your representative).  ENERGY STAR® converts the information you enter into gallons and divides it by the building's square footage. The result is the building's Water Use Intensity (WUI). To calculate the water percentage difference over the competition year, WUI from the previous year is subtracted from the WUI of the current year. The calculated difference is how we determine the biggest loser.

WUI = gallons/square footage

Current Year - Prior Year = % lost or gained
