WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

All OHLA members are welcome to enter one or more hotels, inns or resorts of any size in the competition as long as the building is located in the state of Ohio. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Contestants are required to upload complete energy usage data for the 2017 calendar year (January thru December) into EPA's ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager energy management tool at www.energystar.gov/portfoliomanager. This will be your starting weight. It is optional to enter the water reductions portion. TIMELINE The registration period will be open the entire month of March and close on March 31st. Once the registration closes, categories will be determined based on type and number of building entries.

Competition will begin on April 1st, 2018 and finish on March 31, 2019.

HOW WILL DATA BE CALCULATED Energy use is measured in kBtu's. This data comes from the utility bills that are entered into ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager. Portfolio Manager converts the information entered into a whole building kBtu and divides it by the building's square footage. The result is the building's Energy Use Intensity (EUI). To calculate the energy percentage difference over the competition year, the weather normalized EUI from the previous year is subtracted from the weather normalized EUI of the current year. The calculated difference is how we determine the biggest losers.

EUI = kBtu's/square footage

Current Year - Prior Year = % lost or gained

Water use is measured in gallons. This data comes from water bills and that are entered into ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager by you (or your representative).  ENERGY STAR® converts the information you enter into gallons and divides it by the building's square footage. The result is the building's Water Use Intensity (WUI). To calculate the water percentage difference over the competition year, WUI from the previous year is subtracted from the WUI of the current year. The calculated difference is how we determine the biggest loser.

WUI = gallons/square footage

Current Year - Prior Year = % lost or gained

HOW WILL WINNERS BE DETERMINED

Using the data submitted to Portfolio Manager, OHLA and EPA will determine which competitors have shown the greatest energy reduction using each contestants weather normalized source energy use intensity from January 1st to December 31st. A third-party certification will be conducted on winning buildings to ensure the data input into ENERGY STAR® was accurately reported. RECOGNITION The winners will also be recognized at an exciting Summer Solstice 2019 celebration event on June 21, 2019, and on social media, and through news releases.
