Coronavirus Unemployment Update (from OHLA partner CareWorks)

The State of Ohio is making changes to the unemployment system to help mitigate the impacts on individuals and businesses that are affected by quarantines, closures and reductions in work hours. The state will provide relief to applicants who are not offered paid leave through their job, as well as those who have been quarantined by a medical professional, their employer, or whose employers must temporarily close. Those who apply for unemployment under these circumstances will be exempt from the requirement that they be actively seeking work. See details and Q&A provided by CareWorks

Also in response to COVID-19, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) is making temporary policy changes that will allow flexibility in the provision of care to injured workers, including work at home situations. These changes include telemedicine, telephone services, and waiver of some prior authorization requirements. See more info here.

Unemployment Step by Step - Information from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services
Ohioans can apply for unemployment benefits online 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at unemployment.ohio.gov. It is also possible to file by phone at 877-644-6562 or TTY at 888- 642-8203, Monday through Friday 7:00am to 7:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday 9:00am to 1:00pm. Employers can email questions to UCTech@jfs.ohio.gov.

SharedWork - Information from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services
A State of Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services (ODJFS) program known as SharedWork Ohio can help employers avoid some layoffs. The goal of the program is to allow workers to remain employed and employers to retain trained staff during times of reduced business activity.

Under SharedWork Ohio, the participating employer reduces affected employees’ hours in a uniform manner. The participating employee works the reduced hours each week, and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services provides eligible individuals an unemployment benefit proportionate to their reduced hours. For the duration of the pandemic, ODJFS is committed to reviewing and responding to all SharedWork Ohio applications within one week of receipt.
